Douglas Simoes

I first met Douglas 10 years ago, when we were introduced by a mutual friend because, at the time, I was interested to run one of Brazil’s most remote rivers – the Jalapao. I was immediately impressed by Douglas and his ability to live his dreams through adventure, and we were fast friends. For the last decade, I’ve been lucky enough to share adventures in Douglas in many locations around the world and I have great confidence that we’ll be friends for life.

What is your everyday magic?

Keep it basic, simple and easy. Walking is the way to accomplish this as it’s a way to meet people, and get to remote places where you can be disconnected. Walking is a great way to explore and even discover the city and see things you never before noticed where you live between simple errands.

Unfortunately, in many parts of the world like Brazil, sidewalks are not good because most people use cars and so they are not prioritized. A magical day on foot can give you the opportunity to call a loved one (or several) and have a deeper conversation that you don’t usually have the time for. Walking is freedom.

I prefer not to drive, so when I have to go farther I like to go by bike, or carpool, or take public transport.

When I travel for vacation, I can live out of a backpack for months on end. Not owning a car releases me from the expenses which I can use to travel and hike in the mountains.

What strategy and tactics do you utilize to live your best life?

To have a simple and inexpensive life, to have less, to expect almost nothing. Travel is what drives inspires me, and now that wanderlust extends to my family. We get the same great pleasure out of traveling near or far.

It’s not about spending on stuff. Once we are free of it, we are free to do what we want for work.

Life is a journey that starts when we were born and the clock is ticking. We can be both responsible and at the same time enjoy life.

Invest in children, they will change the future - not the adults.

What are your top 3 tips for success?

Success is the most difficult word in the world. I don’t know what success is, so I don’t know how to give tips for success. I prefer stick with the question 2, to be happy.

What book do you want to give everyone you know because you believe it has the power to change lives?
